The Johnson Lake Campground in Kasilof remains unfinished as the Alaska Department of Parks and Recreation works to negotiate a contract with a new company.
Chief of Design Construction for State Parks Rys Miranda said the previous contractor’s bond company put the remaining work out to bid July 21.
Miranda: “They received one bid and it was a conditioned bid and we met with them out there a couple times to show them the project and kind of help with that negotiation process but unfortunately it hasn’t advanced too far towards an award.”
As we previously reported, Double A Construction, the previous contractor, broke its contract with State Parks earlier this year and did not complete the work that was due to originally be done May 31, and Miranda said Double A did not give a reason as to why they did not finish the work.
Miranda said they are still hopeful to salvage the rest of the construction season that is left.
Miranda: “And realistically this one contractor we know pretty well and they do good work and we know they’re capable of completing most of it, there’s some items that obviously can’t be done like seeding, missed that window but they can definitely get a bulk of the work done and we’re confident of that so we’re just trying to help the negotiation process right now and hopefully convince the bonding company to award.”
He said the final finishing touches like seeding will be completed next spring and hopefully that west loop of the camp ground will reopen by Memorial Day 2015.
