Judiciary Committee Hears Testimony Over Firearms in Universities

The Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony today from the National Rifle Association on a bill that would allow people to carry concealed firearms on University of Alaska campuses.

Brian Judy with the NRA said that U.S. and Alaska Constitutions allow individuals the right to bear arms and wondered why a state entity like the university can disavow that right.

Judy also addressed arguments that UAA President Pat Gamble has made about not allowing firearms on campuses. Gamble was present at the meeting but did not speak and is scheduled to give testimony next week on the bill.
