The Kenai Kardinals hockey team recorded a 3-2 victory over the Juneau Douglas Crimson Bears on Saturday to earn a split of the two-game series with the Bears.
Saturday Hockey Results: Kenai 3 – Juneau 2
Kenai opened the scoring with a Levi Mese power-play goal and followed with a Chris Hagel put-back for a 2-0 Kardinal lead after one period of hockey. Jacob O’Brien netted a power-play goal in the second period for a 3-0 Kenai lead. Juneau closed to 3-2 in the third period; however a 35 save performance by Kenai goalie Ryan Williams held of a late charge by Juneau.
Friday Hockey Results: Juneau 12 – Kenai 4
The firepower of the Juneau Douglas Crimson Bears proved too much for the Kenai Kardinal hockey team; as Juneau downs Kenai 12-4 in non-conference hockey action on Friday at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex.
Kenai’s Ian Mercado opened the scoring just :31 seconds into the contest; however, Juneau answered with a goal a minute later to tie the game at 1-1. Kenai’s Matt Hagel retied the game at 2-2 midway through the first period, then Juneau dominated the remaining 37 minutes. Juneau lead 3-2 after one period; 9-3 after the second; and 12-4 at the game’s conclusion.
Bailey Maxson added a Kardinal second period goal and Jacob O’Brien scored a goal in the third for Kenai. Final Score: Juneau 12 – Kenai 4
