“Junk Cars” Back Up for Discussion in Kenai

The particulars of owning “junk cars” are still being worked on for the city of Kenai.

The Kenai City Council will further discuss regulations at a second work session scheduled for 5:30 pm on September 14.

City Manager Rick Koch said one regulation previously considered was a mandatory car cover and sight obscuring fence to store junk cars.

Koch: “And we kicked that around and thought do you need both of those things? Do you need a sight obscuring fence and a cover or would a cover be sufficient? You’re limited to a maximum of four [junk cars] and that’s only if you have a really large back yard.”

The original mandate that the car covers must be earth toned will also be changed.

Koch: “As these things go, we went and found other ordinances in other communities and that’s just one we grabbed. So that wasn’t a big deal, it just has to be a car cover, it can’t just be a plastic tarp.”

The original regulations discussed would apply to both residential and industrial zones.

Koch said issues with junk cars have typically only come from residential zones, not industrial, so council will consider if regulations should apply to both.
