K-Beach Road Likely to Reopen Fully Wednesday

Department of Transportation crews have been working since Monday morning to repair the damages to Mile one of K-Beach Road caused by Sunday’s 7.1 magnitude earthquake.

Shannon McCarthy: “They cut up the broken up pavement, they were able to grind it up, they brought in D-1, it’s a type of gravel. They were able to level it out, to be able to provide a good traveling surface on both lanes.”

Shannon McCarthy, spokeswoman with the DOT, says the 150 foot section of K-Beach road under maintenance will likely be reopened to two-lane traffic on Wednesday.

The area repaired will remain gravel for the rest of the winter. Drivers are warned the speed limit there has been decreased to 25 mph for the repairs.

McCarthy: “Unfortunately these temperatures and the fact that we may be getting snow and maybe rain, aren’t conducive to paving. So we will have to wait until summertime for a permanent fix.”

K-Beach road was the only damage to Alaska’s road system reported to the Department of Transportation following Sunday’s quake.
