Solid pitching and seven runs generated in two innings proved the winning formula for the Kenai Kardinal baseball team in a 7-3 victory over the Soldotna Stars in Southcentral Conference baseball. The Kardinals improve to 7-1 in conference play, Kenai, unbeaten between the lines, will forfeit a conference victory to Homer; more on the forfeit forthcoming.
Kenai 7 – SoHi 3
Kenai starter Gavin Pettersen pitched a complete-game, seven hitter and allowed only one earned run in the seventh inning to earn the victory on the mound for the Kardinals. The Stars scored two runs in the first inning, scoring on a pair of Kardinal errors with two outs. SoHi leads 2-0 into the third inning. The Kardinals record three runs in the bottom of the third and added four runs in the fifth inning. SoHi closed the scoring with a lone, earned run in the seventh. Gavin Pettersen helped his cause with a pair of hits; Paul Steffensen added two hits and two runs scored.
Kardinals Forfeit Conference Victory
The Kenai Kardinals baseball team, perfect between the lines, will forfeit its May 2nd Southcentral Conference victory over Homer due to a violation of the ASAA high school baseball pitch count regulations.
The Alaska School Activities Association instituted guidelines for pitch counts for the 2017 season, replacing the use of innings counts for high school pitchers. Under the new guidelines, pitchers throwing 106 pitches in a single game must have four days rest. Kenai’s Gavin Pettersen, according to the Palmer home score book, pitched 109 pitches in a victory over Palmer on April 28th; Pettersen took to the mound against Homer on May 2nd with less than the required rest. Homer filled a protest to ASAA with was upheld. The Kardinals record now stands at 7-1, with one conference loss.
