The 2016 ASAA/First National Bank Soccer Championships opened on Thursday with competition in both girls and boys 4A soccer; Thursday’s games played Service and Eagle River High School. Teams are paired by a blind draw for the quarterfinal round.
Northern Lights Conference teams recorded a victory for the Kenai boys and a pair of first round losses for the Soldotna boys and Kenai girls.

The Kenai girls opened against the Service Cougars and managed only a single, first half goal against the Cougars in a 4-1 Service victory. Kenai’s Olivia Brewer scored the Kardinals lone goal.
Kenai will face Juneau on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Eagle River High School. Juneau fell to West 4-0 in the first round.

South 4, Juneau 3 (penalty kicks)

Kenai 2 – Colony 1
Kenai drew NLC rival Colony in the tournament’s first round and the Kardinals recorded a 2-1 victory over the Knights. The Kardinals defeated Colony 3-1 in the NLC title game last Saturday.
Draiden McMinn and Zack Tuttle combined for the Kardinal goals. Kenai advances to play Service on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Service High School.
West 3 – SoHi 1
The West Eagles defeated SoHi 3-1, the Eagles breaking open a 1-1 tie with two, unanswered goals. The Stars face Juneau in the consolation round on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Eagle River High School.
