After splitting first place finishes in the 6.5-kilometer freestyle and 6.5-kilometer classic races at the 2016 Region III Nordic Ski Championships, Kenai’s Riana Boonstra and Addison Gibson were separated by only :17 seconds in combined total, two-race time.
Riana Boonstra, with the victory in the freestyle event and a second in the classic event, posted the best two-day total time; finishing just ahead of teammate Addison Gibson, who won the classic race and finished second in the freestyle race. Boonstra claims the Region III Female Skimeister Award for 2016.
Team Championship Results
The Kenai girls and the Soldotna boys raced to the team titles for the Region III championships.
Girls Team Results: Kenai, Colony, Palmer, SoHi, Homer
The Kenai girls, in addition to the performances by Boonstra and Gibson, received quality finishes by Katie Cooper, 9th in freestyle and 8th in classic; and Mikaela Salzetti, 11th in freestyle and 10th in classic.
The SoHi girls finished fourth in the team scoring lead by Hannah Potash, 6th in freestyle and 3rd in classic; and Kellie Arthur, 10th in freestyle and 12th in classic.

The Soldotna boys claim the Region III Nordic Ski title on the strength of four skiers placing in the top ten in each of the two-day’s disciplines.
SoHi was lead by John-Mark Potash, 3rd in freestyle and 7th in classic; Levi Michael, 7th in freestyle and 5th in classic; Koby Vinson, 8th in freestyle and 9th in classic; and Jeremy Kupferschmid, 9th in freestyle and 10th in classic. The Region III Male Skimeister Award goes to Grace Christian’s Trent Fritzel.
2016 ASAA State Nordic Ski Championships
All Region III teams are eligible for the 2016 ASAA Nordic Ski Championships scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, February 25-27 at Kincaid Park in Anchorage.
