The Kenai Kardinals girls cross country running team, winners of a second-straight Region III 4A team championship on Saturday, now set their sights on a repeat championship at the ASAA State Cross Country Running Championships.
The Kardinal girls raced to the school’s first girls team championship in distance running in 2015 winning the state championship, and for 2016 Kenai returns a talented, experienced team to defend their title.
The 2016 ASAA State Cross Country Running Championships are scheduled for Saturday, October 1st on the Bartlett High School trails with the girls 4A race set for 12:45 p.m.
2016 Preview
The Kardinal girls will be lead by 2016 Region III 4A runner-up Jaycie Calvert and 2015 4A state runner-up Riana Boonstra. All five scoring Kenai runners from 2015 return for the Kardinals including: Boonstra, Calvert, Ithaca Bergholtz, Brooke Satathite and Addison Gibson. Seniors Julie Wilson and Kasey Paxton add depth to the Kardinal squad.
In the 1-2-3A division, the Homer girls will vie for a third-straight girls 1-2-3A state team championship. The Mariners are lead by Region III 1-2-3A , two-time champion Megan Pitzman.
