Doubleheader hockey, at split venues, opened a three-day high school hockey weekend with the Kenai Kardinals defeating Railbelt Conference opponent Houston 3-1 and the Soldotna Stars falling to the Division 1 Colony 2-1 on Thursday.
Kenai 3 – Houston 1
The Kardinals and Hawks played scoreless hockey through two and 2/3 periods, then the teams combined for four goals in about a minute to close the third period.
Kenai opened the scoring on a Miles Marsten goal with five minutes remaining in the third period for a 1-0 Kenai lead. Houston answered with a goal off the center-ice face off just :10 seconds later for a 1-1 tie. Then, Kenai’s Malston scored just seconds later and the Kardinals lead 2-1. Add in a Nate Beiser goal for Kenai and all four goals were scored in the course of about a minute. Final Score: Kenai 3, Houston 1
The Kardinals improve to 2-2-1 in the Railbelt.

SoHi 1 – Colony 2
The Stars and Knights battled through three evenly-played periods with the Knights coming out on top 2-1 with a power-play goal in the third period.
SoHi opened the scoring with a Journey Miller goal at 9:22 of the first period with an assist by Trent Powell. Colony’s Dane Jellich tied the game at 1-1 late in the first (13:35).
Following a scoreless second period, Jellich recorded the game-winner on a power-play goal at 5:57 of the third period. Final Score: Sohi 1, Colony2
Goaltending carried the day with SoHi’s Corbin Wirz recording 24 saves on 26 shots and Colony’s Roman Shepard recording 23 saves on 24 shots.
