Volleyball teams from Kenai and Nikiski are testing themselves against non-conference opponents in the early high school season. The Kenai Kardinals remain unbeaten with a Thursday night victory over Nome and the Nikiski Bulldogs open their Fairbanks swing with a loss to Monroe.
Kenai 3 – Nome 0
The Kardinals controlled play against the Nome Nanooks at KCHS recording a three-set sweep of Nome 25-12, 25-15 and 25-14.
Kenai outside hitter Emma Beck totaled 11 kills and 10 digs as the Kardinals dominated at the net with Cali Holmes adding six kills and Jorgi Phillips recording 18 assists and 10 service aces.
Monroe Catholic 3, Nikiski 2
Nikiski opened a three-day swing through Fairbanks with a narrow loss to the Monroe Rams on Thursday at Monroe.
The Bulldogs started strong, winning the first two games 25-20, 25-20 and looking for a three-game sweep. The Rams rallied to take game three 25-14, game four 25-23 and the fifth and deciding game 15-13.
NIkiski’s Ashlynne Playle totaled 10 kills and nine blocks for Nikiski.
Nikiski plays West Valley on Friday and Saturday, September 2nd-3rd in Fairbanks.
