Girls
Kenai 45, Bethel 59
Heroics from Ellsi Miller weren’t enough to overcome a deluge of Bethel fourth quarter 3-pointers in the Kardinals Wednesday night home game against the visiting Warriors.
Miller, who has led the Lady Kardinals all season, played arguably her best game of the season Wednesday, notching 20 points and almost as many rebounds. The Kenai girls fell behind at a couple points through the first three quarters, but thanks to Miller were able to battle back every time and only trailed 37-40 heading into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, that’s when the Bethel perimeter shooting found its groove.
The Warriors made four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, and outscored the Kardinals 19-8 en route to a 45-59 victory.
The Kardinals are now 1-7 overall on the season, and 0-1 in Peninsula Conference play.
Boys
Kenai 43, Bethel 77
The Kardinal boys were outpaced throughout their game against Bethel by a crisp and sustained offensive onslaught from the Warriors. After the first half Kenai was still within striking distance, trailing Bethel by only 12 points, however, the game got out of hand in the third quarter when the Warriors outscored the Kardinals 25-7.
Adding to Kenai’s woes, the team wasn’t helped out by the loss of starting forward Miles Meteer just before halftime when the freshman took a hard foul from Bethel’s Jackson Iverson on a breakaway layup. Meteer scored 9 first half points before missing the remainder of the game.
Ben Harris led the Kardinal’s in scoring with 12 points.
With the loss Kenai fell to 1-7 on the season. They are 0-1 in conference play.
