Kardinals & Mariners Drop State Basketball Openers: Both Continue Play On Friday

The 2021 March Madness Alaska 3A and 4A State Basketball Championships opened play at four different venues on Thursday, March 25th with the Kenai Peninsula represented in the 3A division by the Kenai Kardinal girls and the Homer Mariner girls from the Southcentral Conference.

The basketball state championships run from Thursday, March 25th  through Championship Saturday, March 27th.

 

Kenai Girls 27 – Sitka Girls 57

The #2 seed from the Southcentral Conference faced the #1 seed from the Southeast Conference in the 3A Girls opening game at Palmer Middle School; Sitka downing Kenai 57-27.

The Sitka Wolves jumped out to a 16-4 lead after one quarter and lead 32-7 at the half.  Kenai played a stronger second half; however, Sitka outscored the Kardinals 25-20 in the second half.  Emma Beck lead the Kardinals with 13 points.

Kenai faces Nome on Friday at Colony High School.  Game time scheduled for 2 p.m.

 

ACS Girls 69 – Homer Girls 11

The Anchorage Christian School girls, rank #1 in 3A basketball and the reigning, three-time 3A state champion overpowered the Mariners in the final game of the first round of the 3A girls state tournament.

ACS recorded a 69-11 blow-out of the Mariners powered by a suffocating full court defense and a 41-point offensive display by Sayvia Sellers which included 26, first quarter points.

The game went to a running clock just 5:45 into the second quarter.

The Homer Mariner girls continue 3A state tournament play on Friday with a 4 pm. game against Hutchison.  The Hutchison team is a replacement team for the Valdez Buccaneers, who were unable to attend the state tournament due to positive covid test within the program.

 

Kenai vs Nome and Homer vs Hutchison will be broadcast on ESPN 1140AM and streamed free at radiokenai.com.
