The high school football season moved into the second half of a short, eight-week regular season with all three local teams in action.
Kenai 10 – Wasilla 20
Friday night football spotlighted the Kenai Kardinals on their home turf in a non-divisional contest. The Kards will played their fourth, Large School opponent of the 2014 season, falling to the Wasilla Warriors 20-10.
The Warriors scored on the first kick-off of the night, returning the opening kick 83 yards for a 7-0 Warrior lead. The lead held until the first two minutes of the first half. Kenai scored on a 35 yard field goal by Marshall Vest to pull to within four points at 7-3 Warriors. The Kardinals then recovered a kick return fumble and drove for a touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Jace Baker to Chase Gilles. Kenai lead 10-7 at the half.
The Kardinals turned over the football five times in the second half, three fumbles and two interceptions. Wasilla scored on a 67-yard run and a fumble return for a 15-yard touchdown.
Final Score: Wasilla 20 – Kenai 10
Nikiski 50 – Valdez 0
The Nikiski Bulldogs, 2-1 in the Greatland Conference, dominated play against the Valdez Buccaneers on Saturday, the Bulldogs recording a 50-0 shutout. Christian Riddall recorded five rushing touchdowns and linebacker Luke Johnson intercepted three passes, returning the first interception for the Bulldogs first touchdown.
Soldotna 48 – vs Kodiak 0
The Soldotna Stars traveled to Kodiak for a Northern Lights Conference showdown against the Kodiak Bears on Saturday. SoHi stands at 4-0 on the season, defeating Kodiak 48-0 in the Stars first NLC game of the season.
The Stars lead 21-0 after one quarter and 28-0 at the half. Fullback Jared Chavez scored three touchdowns, Drew Gibbs added a pair of rushing touchdowns and Ty Fenton scored the first touchdown for the Stars. Quarterback Brooks Furlong passed for 171 yards to complement SoHi’s 299 rushing yards.
The SoHi defense allowed under 50 total yards and shutout a third-straight opponent. The Stars current win streak stands at 24 games and the 2014 Stars have not allowed a point since the first quarter of game one; 15 straight, scoreless quarters of football.
