- The balance and equity of the Railbelt Conference for high school hockey was displayed again on Tuesday with the Kenai Kardinals and Soldotna Stars playing to a 4-4 tie on the ice at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility. In two games and seven periods of hockey between the Kards and Stars, Kenai and SoHi are separated by one lone, overtime goal (Kenai topped SoHi 6-5 in overtime in the Peninsula Ice Challenge).
Kenai 4 – SoHi 4
A scoreless overtime period capped an evenly-played hockey contest with the Kardinals and Stars each picking-up a point in a 4-4 overtime tie.
SoHi opened the game with a pair of first period goals; one for Gehret Medcoff and a goal for by Aiden Burcham. Kenai’s Jacob Begich lit the lamp for the Kardinals and SoHi lead 2-1 after one period.
The second period opened with Kenai’s Petty tying the game at 2-2. SoHi regained their lead mid-way through the second period on a Marshall DeReave goal. Under two minutes later, Landon Cialek drew Kenai back to even at 3-3. The Stars regained the lead on a Dylan Dahlgren goal.
The only goal of the third period came off the stick of Kenai’s Daniel Sheldon at 9:37 tying the contest at 4-4. A scoreless overtime and Kenai and SoHi skate away with a 4-4 tie and each earns a point in the Railbelt Conference standings.
Carson Koppes recorded 28 saves for the Kardinals and SoHi’s Tanner Clyde recorded 33 saves for the Stars.
The Kardinals stand at 7-6-1 and 3-1-1 in the Railbelt Conference play; SoHi stands at 7-6-1 and 2-2-1 in the conference.
Kenai travels to Kodiak for a pair of Railbelt Conference games with Friday’s contest scheduled for 8 p.m. and Saturday’s game set for 9 a.m.
