Alaskans are one step closer to clear state regulations on marijuana after the Senate yesterday passed their version of the new laws.

Sen. Micciche(R-K. Pen): “The truth is, marijuana is a controlled substance under federal law. So our trick, or our goal was to initiate the will of the voters while still protecting them from possible consequences under federal law.”

 

Micciche said there are 8 points the federal government asks states to abide by when legalizing marijuana to avoid conflicts.

 

The bill also prohibits marijana commercial or retail industries in areas where there is no organized borough or city.

 

Several amendments failed during yesterday’s lengthy floor debate, including Fairbanks Senator Peter Kelly’s proposal to make marijuana concentrates illegal in two years. Critics said they want to abide by the will of the people, as passed in last year’s voter initiative.

 

The bill passed 17-3 vote and now goes to the State House.
