The Kenai City Council enacts an ordinance that would increase estimated revenues and appropriations in the General Fund – Police Department and accepting a grant from the Alaska High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area for drug investigation overtime expenditures.
The Kenai Police Department assists the regional drug task force on initiatives with funding availability through the Alaska High Intensity Drug Traffic Area, which is funded through a federal government appropriation. This funding is available to reimburse certain overtime expenditures for the Kenai Police Officers that assist the regional drug task force or directly participate in the task force on related initiatives.
The Kenai Police Department, according to Police Chief Dave Ross, requested reimbursement for $12,090.59 in overtime expenditures. The expenses ranged from July of 2021 through the end of March 2022.
Council Member Glenese Pettey told council:
“I’d just like to commend Chief Ross for going out and finding this grant and having these resources available for our community so that it keeps our property taxes down and resources don’t have to come from our general fund.”
Overtime for these additional expenditures for drug investigations were not budgeted and the Kenai Police Department requested appropriation into the FY22 overtime budget equal to the amount of the Alaska High Intensity Drug Traffic Area funding.
The ordinance was enacted unanimously.
