Kenai Amends Twin City Athletic Association Gym Fees

The Kenai City Council passed a resolution that temporarily waives the gym rental fee at the Kenai Recreation Center for the Twin City Athletic Association. The resolution amends the TCAA’s gym fees for the months of March and April. The organization operates a City Adult Basketball League, and the resolution waives the gym rental fees for the remaining games.

 

In response to the question of if this is a pump-priming fund, City Manager Paul Ostrander said:

“Twin City Athletic Association wasn’t even formed until late last year and they put together their budget and thought that, based on that, they’d be able to cover, in the end, they weren’t able to, but they have said specifically they have the ability, they think, to cover next year. This is really giving them a little bit of, waiving these fees one year, so that they can reorganize so that next year they will be able to fulfill all of their obligations as far as fees to the city.”

 

Ostrander adds:

“The turnout’s been excellent, not only in the adult leagues, but now they’ve added the middle school league as well and in talking to TCAA, they really are interested in expanding recreational opportunities to all ages in multiple different types of sports in the community, so I’m excited to see what they’re going to do in the future.”

 

In July 2021, the City of Kenai Parks and Recreation took over the operations of the Kenai Recreation Center. For the last eighteen years, the Boys and Girls Club had operated the building and managed the popular City League Adult Basketball program, known commonly as City League. Kenai says that when Parks and Recreation stepped in, they started looking for a partner to help manage the league. That’s where local resident, and business owner, Ryan Tunseth got a group of people together and started the TCAA.

 

The City’s fee schedule of rates, charges and fees provides an hourly gym rental fee of $50/hour. The resolution waives the costs for March and April 2022. According to the city council, there are 67 total games of waived fees. With 67 games multiplied by $50 per game, the total fee waiver revision comes to $3,350.

 

The resolution unanimously passed as amended.
