Many gathered at various locations in Kenai and Soldotna for Memorial Day services to honor those who have served in the U.S. military. The ceremonies commemorated the men and women who died while serving in the armed forces—a solemn tribute to the cost of the freedom we have today.

Kenai Cemetery | Avenue of Flags

Under clear skies and warm sunshine, folks experienced the Avenue of Flags at the Kenai Cemetery. Henry Knackstedt, Kenai City Vice Mayor, whose father served in WWII, said that he was not only here for himself but also to represent the city and the important day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

“Those that are living and deceased they provided all of us the opportunity to do what we want to do, or enjoy life as we Americans do today. It’s a rarity in the world to have the kind of freedoms we have, and we’re doing that really on the back of those people that fought and died for us.” Said Vice Mayor Knackstedt.

In Soldotna, veterans, their family members, and supporters witnessed a Firing of the Salute. Borough Mayor Peter Micciche said that his message for Memorial Day was “don’t waste the blood of those who gave their lives for us.”

“They gave it to defend our great country. The greatest country on the face of the earth of all time, so don’t waste their blood.” Mayor Micciche said. “Please honor those who gave their all for us for these amazing things that we enjoy, these amazing freedoms, and this amazing country.”
