The Kenai City Council passed a resolution that would authorize the design services required to provide bid ready construction documents for repairs at the Recreation Center. It will replace the existing built-up asphalt roof with an adhered single membrane roof system.
Kenai City Manager Paul Ostrander:
“This is money that was appropriated, I believe, portions of it in the last two fiscal years. What this does is it awards a contract for design services for a couple things at the rec center. The first is the complete roof replacement, which as everyone here on council knows is something that is long overdue. We’ll be designing the roof replacement. Also, along with that, corrections to the HVAC systems, including the rooftop units that are likely those that need to be replaced, will be replaced in the roof replacement. Also look at the boiler and hot water systems. Beyond that, a code assessment and planning for the facility as a whole. This is the first step in these, what will be construction projects, in the priority. The first would be the roof replacement and then HVAC systems, then hot water system. The last part, of course, is not a construction project, but just an assessment and planning of the entire project. This is the first step in what is going to be a significant amount of improvement at that facility.”
According to the city’s public works director, as numerous roof top air handling units of various ages reside on the existing roof, this project will evaluate those units, replacing them at the end of their useful life, and provide remaining life estimates for remaining equipment to be included in future Capital Improvement Plans.
In passing the resolution, Ostrander will execute an agreement with K+A Design Studios for the Recreation Center Improvements project. The purchase order will be in the amount of $92,085.
