Last week the City of Kenai awarded a construction contract for the South Beach dip net access road to Big Mike’s Construction of Kenai.
City Manager Rick Koch says Big Mike’s came in with the lowest bid.
Koch: “To construct the roadway up to a gravel surface so that it’s ready for this year’s personal use fishery. Ultimately it will be paved out, all the way to Cannery Road.”
Koch says the bidding process was highly competitive with about 13 companies vying for the job.
He says that may be indicative of a slow economy.
Koch: “For a project of that size, that’s not normal, you wouldn’t expect to see that many bidders and some of them are pretty good sized outfits that you’d think that wouldn’t normally look at jobs this size. So my initial reaction to that is that there’s just not a lot of work out there right now and maybe some folks think that there won’t be much work coming out so they’re bidding on everything that they have an opportunity.”
The bid came in at a total of $117,000.
