Kenai City Council to Hear Public Comment on Shelter Changes

The Kenai City Council will hear from a Kenai Peninsula resident who opposes recent changes to the Kenai Animal Shelter procedures tonight.

Porter: “You know one of the most interesting things that’s probably going to be happening this evening is we have Tim Colbath who’s going to be coming and talking about the closure of the animal shelter drop boxes.”

 

That was Kenai Mayor Pat Porter who said other than that the agenda for tonight is relatively light.

 

She said Colbath originally contacted her when the shelter announced it would be locking the outdoor kennels originally used to deposit animals at the shelter after hours.

 

There were numerous problems with that intake method according to Kenai City Manager Rick Koch and the new option is more humane.

 Koch: “We are requesting that people call our police dispatch number and a police officer or an animal control officer will respond and take the animal in. This provides a much more humane process and a process that has the opportunity for much higher success in getting a lost animal back to an owner and for finding out information about an animal so that we are more efficiently able to adopt them.”

 

The Kenai Police Department’s number is 283-7879.

 

Tim Colbath is scheduled to speak at the 7:00 pm council meeting tonight in the Kenai Council Chambers, immediately followed by unscheduled public comment.
