Kenai Cultural Center Presents Fish & Water History In The Kenai Peninsula

The Kenai Chamber of Commerce Cultural Center’s June edition of Beyond the Exhibit delves into the history of fish and water in the Kenai Peninsula and highlights traditional fishing practices.

 

This month’s display features unique artifacts, including seal-skin boat models and an exhibit on the historic local figure known as “Moosemeat John.”

 

These items are part of the Cultural Center’s 4,000-piece collection, which spans from pre-contact times to the present.

 

Each month, the Cultural Center rotates its exhibit to showcase artifacts that have never been on display before.

 

The rotating exhibit is paired with a lecture series featuring guest speakers discussing topics related to the month’s theme.

 

June’s guest speaker is Jon Ross from the Salamatof Native Association, who will present a lecture on traditional knowledge of fish and water. It’s scheduled for June 25 at noon.

 

“He’ll be talking about fish and water and the traditional ways of knowing,” said Danielle Lopez Stamm, Coordinator for the Kenai Cultural Center.

 

Ross, a board member of the association, will also return as July’s speaker.
