The road construction of the new South Beach Access off of K-Beach Road will be completed this week, but Kenai crews will be working on the finishing touches until the Personal Use Fishery opens in July.
Kenai Public Works Director Sean Wedemeyer detailed the material that crews will place on top of the road, beginning tomorrow at 8 am.
Wedemeyer: “Leveling course we have decided to replace with recycled asphalt pavement, is a little better product, it’s what is created when you grind up existing asphalt pavement. You place it and level it as you would with leveling course such as D1, then you compact it with rollers and it provides a surface that is relatively dust free and easier to maintain.”
The final step and finishing touches will take approximately three weeks. Crews will continue to work in the area to get the new access ready for the slews of Alaskans who take part in the Personal Use Dipnet Fishery.
Wedemeyer: “We need to place our fee shacks and then our IT guru needs to set up all the equipment inside. We have to set up for example, jersey barriers and other traffic control. At the end of the day we’ll be ready for the fishery but we will be working right up to the beginning of it for sure.”
Drivers should be cautious when approaching the construction area and be prepared to stop.
