The Kenai Kardinal girls 3A state basketball experience closed-out on Thursday with a consolation round loss to the Valdez Buccaneers in overtime 49-44 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.

 

Valdez Girls 49 – Kenai Girls 44  Overtime

Opening Thursday’s play in the ASAA 3A Girls State Basketball Championships, Kenai battled to tie the Bucs in regulation before falling 49-44 in the overtime.

The Kardinals were plagued throughout with foul trouble and turnovers.

Senior Logan Satathite fell victim to early fouls and spent a majority of the regulation and all of the overtime on the Kardinal bench.  Sophomore Emma Beck also spent considerable time on Kenai’s sideline, however, finished regulation and the overtime period without committing her fifth foul.  For the game, Kenai recorded 34 turnovers which limited the Kardinals to only 35 shots in the contest; in contrast, Valdez committed 13 turnovers and recorded 66 shots for the game.

Emma Beck lead Kenai with 18 points and 20 rebounds.  Off the Kardinal bench, Amber Nash and Denali Bernard scored 13 and 11 points and gathered seven rebounds.

Valdez advances to the 3A girls 4th-Place Game on Friday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

 

Barrow Boys 55 – Homer Boys 46

The Barrow Whalers advance to the 3A boys 4th-Place Game with a 55-46 victory over the Homer Mariners on Thursday at the ASAA 3A Boys State Basketball Championships.

Homer led 11-8 after one quarter, fell behind 26-22 at the half and never lead in the second half; the Whalers never relinquishing the lead and extending the lead in the final three minutes for a nine-point margin of victory.

Noah Irons lead the Mariners with 12 points and Peyton Edens added 10 points.

Barrow advances to the 3A boys 4th-Place Game on Friday at the Alaska Airlines Center.
