The Kenai Kardinal girls and boys basketball teams battled for a spot at the 2022 ASAA 3A State Basketball Championships on Saturday in the 2nd-Place games at the 3A Peninsula Conference Basketball Tournament at Kenai Central High School.
The Peninsula Conference owns two berths on the girls and boys brackets for the ASAA 3A State Basketball Championships; one for the conference tournament champion and one for the tournament runner-up, both girls and boys.
The Grace Christian girls and boys won the Peninsula Conference championships on Friday night at KCHS.
The Kenai girls and Homer boys won the 2nd-Place games on Saturday at KCHS.
Kenai Girls 38 – Homer 27
The Kardinal girls combined pressure guard defense and limited turnovers for a 38-27 victory over the Homer Mariners in the Peninsula Conference 2nd-Place game on Saturday.
Kenai limited Homer to a single field goal in the second quarter, while the Kardinals scored 14 points and built a 19-10 half time lead. Homer closed to within five point in the third quarter before Kenai mounted a 14-point fourth quarter and allowed just one field goal for a 38-27 victory.
Emma Beck scored 18 points for Kenai and Amber Nash added eight points. Logan Satathite hit two, timely three-point shots and the trio of Satathite, Malerie Nunn and Emilee Wilson controlled the ball and pressured the Mariners offense into numerous turnovers.
The Kenai girls advance to the ASAA 3A State basketball Championships scheduled for March 23-26 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.
Homer Boys 62 – Kenai 39
Homer opened the second-place game with a 10-2 run and dominated play in the second quarter for a 42-16 halftime advantage. Homer scored 30 points in the second quarter and for all intents and purposes insured the victory over the Kardinals. Carter Tennison lead the Mariners offense (and defense) with 20 points; Payton Eden scored 11 points, all in the first half for the Mariners. Jakob Kvasnikoff scored 12 and Eil McCubbins added 11 points for Kenai.
The Homer boys advance to the ASAA 3A State basketball Championships scheduled for March 23-26 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.
