The Kenai Historical Society is proposing reversing the direction of the one way street in Old Town Kenai in order to offer a better view.
Betty Idleman with the Society outlined what inspired the letter to the Kenai City Council.
Idleman: “Now this is the road that runs around the Russian Church and comes back out around the beach. And if it goes the other way you can see Redoubt, you can see the mountains, you can see the bluff in its fall colors with fireweed. As it is now you come around and all you do is look at the mouth of the river unless you stop and turn and look. And we felt that by going the other way you’d see the mountains and everything and go around and see Veronica’s and get a better view of the church.”
Kenai Mayor Pat Porter addressed the Historical Society’s letter that had been sent to her and Kenai City Manager Rick Koch at last week’s council meeting.
Porter said that no action by the council has taken place on the proposal.
Porter: “I personally don’t see any problem with it but that would be a safety issue so the City Manager and the police department would have to look at that and see how it would work, but it makes sense to me, I think it’s a much prettier view if you come in the other way.”
She added that Koch has guaranteed to look into it when he returns from vacation.
