The Kenai Kardinal hockey team advances to the 4th-place contest at the 2022 ASAA Division II State Hockey Championships with a 7-4 victory over Juneau in Friday’s consolation/elimination game at the Menard Arena in Wasilla.
Kenai 7 – Juneau 4
Daniel Sheldon scored two goals and added three assists in Kenai’s 7-4 win over the Crimson Bears. Logan Mese also scored two goals and accounted for two assists for Kenai.
The Kardinals opened a 3-0 lead in the first period with goals by Mese, Ayden Spann and Jacob Begich. In the second period, Sheldon scored a power-play goal sandwiched between two Juneau goals, one for Bentz and one for Sam Bovitz. Leading 4-2 to open the third period, Sheldon extended Kenai’s lead to 5-2 at 4:21 of the third. Then, Juneau scored a pair of power-play goals: a 5 on 3 goal for Lucas Bovitz and a 5 on 4 goal by Sam Bovitz to draw Juneau to within a goal at 5-4. Kenai’s Mese added a power-play goal at 7:39 and Jacob Begich scored an empty-netter at 14:28 to secure a 7-4 victory for the Kardinals.
In goal for Kenai, Kate Harris recorded 12 saves on 16 shots and Carson Koppes recorded four saves on four shots.
Kenai faces SoHi in the 4th-place game on Saturday at noon at the 2022 ASAA Division II State Hockey Championships.
