Kenai Multipurpose Facility Upgrades to be Discussed

Kenai City Council will hear public testimony on awarding the agreement of design upgrades on the Multipurpose Facility to local K+A Design Studio.

City Manager Rick Koch said the upgrades to the facility, also known as the Ice Rink near the Kenai High School, have been talked about for about a decade.

Koch: “Upgrading that facility to include locker rooms and the build out of the rest of the building for an expansion that may include an indoor grass turf facility.

The resolution states the approximate cost of the design documents for the upgrades is about $10,000.

Koch said he thinks it will add a great element to the facility.

Koch: “The kind of facility that we have there is a very good fit to have both of those things together, to have ice and artificial turf and artificial turf is remarkably inexpensive to operate and maintain unlike trying to keep water frozen. Once you guild a turf facility which is roughly the same size as an olympic sheet of ice, 11 feet by 200 feet, those places  are very very busy, they’re heavily used by soccer teams, softball teams, many other kinds of activities.”

K+A designs is located in Kenai and has worked on projects like the Soldotna Library, the Kenai Stanley Chrysler renovation, and the Kenai Chamber and Visitors Center.

That meeting will be held at the Kenai Council Chambers at 7:00 pm.
