A Kenai-based lab has earned federal accreditation to officially test and measure petroleum products—an approval that’s valid through June 2026.
With this latest federal accreditation, AmSpec LLC is now listed among a select group of labs across the country approved to perform critical petroleum testing and measurement for customs clearance. The lab follows strict technical protocols set by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
The designation allows the company to carry out high-level lab testing and inspection work that meets national standards. That includes checking sulfur content, oil density, temperature, tank levels, and more—essential for tracking quality and compliance in the oil and gas industry.
This isn’t AmSpec’s first venture. The company has been operating in Kenai since 2015 and opened what it called the first independent petroleum testing lab on the Kenai Peninsula in 2017.
“AmSpec Alaska’s initial success since its inception was based on inspections of crude oil loadings across Cook Inlet,” said CEO Matt Corr in a company statement at the time. “I’m pleased to say our highly trained staff is offering statewide inspection and laboratory testing coverage—including Anchorage, Valdez, Homer, Kenai, and other key ports and terminals.”
AmSpec’s local lab can handle testing for crude oil, high sulfur fuel, vacuum gas oil, diesel, and jet fuel.
For the Kenai Peninsula, the approval could be another boost to local energy infrastructure, bringing more technical and professional opportunities to the region.
Anyone looking to use AmSpec’s services for customs-related petroleum testing is encouraged to confirm their accreditation for the specific service needed. A full list of accredited labs is available at cbp.gov.
