A Kenai man was arrested on Tuesday morning after he was brandishing a loaded shotgun in traffic near Mountain View Elementary School, pointing the weapon at passing vehicles.
According to Kenai Police Lieutenant Ben Langham, reports of 63-year-old Kenai resident Dale Curtiss’s actions came in just after 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, Jan. 14.
“Yesterday morning at about 8:17 the police department received a call of a man walking in the road near Swires in the spur Highway,” Langham said. “While the officers were en route, we received updated information that the man, in fact, had a gun and had pointed it at vehicles that were passing by.”
Langham said that when officers arrived on the scene, Curtiss’s shotgun had been leaned against a sign. Later, KPD officers found that the shotgun was loaded.
The incident occurred right around dropoff time for Mountain View Elementary students, quickly generating attention on social media. Curtiss was seen by several people, and online posts indicated the threat but also that officers were on scene soon thereafter.
Curtiss was taken into custody without incident.
Curtiss was taken to Wildwood Pretrial and charged with two counts of assault in the third degree.
