A Kenai man has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a series of assaults against a former partner, agreeing to serve 33 years in prison under a plea deal announced by prosecutors.
Travis Amos George, 42, entered guilty pleas on Apr. 24, the first day of his trial, to a consolidated count of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and a consolidated count of Assault in the Third Degree. Under the terms of the agreement, George will serve an initial term of 33 years behind bars — 30 years for the sexual assault charge and an additional three years for the assault charge. He will also be on probation for 25 years following his release and must register as a sex offender and complete treatment as conditions of his probation.
Prosecutors said George admitted to multiple acts of sexual and physical assault against his then-partner between June and December 2019. He also admitted to aggravating factors, including repeated assaults against the same victim and other family members over the preceding decade.
According to the Alaska Department of Law, the agreement brings closure to a long-running case and avoids the uncertainty of a trial for the victim and her family.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Julie Matucheski and Sam Scott.
The Kenai Police Department investigated the matter, with Officer Dan Smith serving as the primary investigator. Advocacy support was provided by the Kenaitze Indian Tribe’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Advocacy Program.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 27 at 3:30 p.m.
