Kenai Man, Sterling Teen Arrested On Weapons Charges In Cooper Landing

A routine traffic stop on Saturday led to the arrest of two men, one of them 19, for the illegal possession of certain weapons, including an AK-47.

 

Shortly before 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 6, Seward Alaska State Troopers conducted the traffic stop along the Sterling Highway in Cooper Landing. Once the Troopers reached the vehicle, their investigation revealed that 20-year-old Kenai resident Michael Stillings was intoxicated and in possession of a concealed short-barreled AK-47.

 

According to Alaska State Law, individuals are not required to possess a permit to carry a concealed firearm, but they must be at least 21 years of age.

 

19-year-old Sterling resident Isaiah Maal, who was in the vehicle with Stillings, admitted to being the owner of the assault rifle and was also in possession of a concealed handgun.

 

A search of the vehicle also revealed the two were in possession of alcohol, marijuana, kratom, a large machete, and the two aforementioned firearms.

 

Stillings was placed under arrest for MIW (misconduct involving weapons) in the 3rd degree, 4th degree, and 5th degree.

 

Maal was placed under arrest for MIW in the 3rd degree and 5th degree.

 

Both Stillings and Maal were transported to Spring Creek Correctional Center, where they were remanded without bail.
