Conversation pertaining to cancelling and scheduling regular city council meetings ruled the discussion between council members Wednesday night.
Councilors Terry Bookey and Bob Molloy had introduced an ordinance to create policy regarding establishing, changing, or cancelling meeting dates.
Cm. Molloy: “Looking in advance at a calendar for a whole year so we could discuss in advance whether there are dates that might conflict with things like one was next year we have one on December 21 which is in Christmas week and that might not be good for the public. So that we might have an orderly process for that instead of doing it by the seat of our pants without any notice.”
Molloy requested postponement until January 6, 2016 since Bookey was not at Wednesday’s meeting and might want to comment on the ordinance or amendments.
The council also failed a resolution brought forward by council member Tim Navarre that would have scheduled meetings through 2016.
Kenai Mayor Pat Porter says both proposed actions are too cumbersome.
Mayor Porter: “The voters gave the city council the authority to cancel a meeting if they felt it was necessary and I don’t think the structure of that needs to be written down so that it’s in concrete and you can never do it unless you go through a procedure.”
She voted no on the 2016 calendar resolution, saying she doesn’t believe in scheduling meetings so far out because things change and it makes it more confusing to cancel.
