The Kenai Peninsula Borough voted to appropriate funds for Fiscal Year 2022. Alaska Statute and Kenai Peninsula Borough code require that the mayor present a budget proposal to the assembly for the next fiscal year during or prior to the eighth week preceding the first day of the fiscal year. The assembly is empowered with making appropriations for the General Fund, the Special Revenue Funds, the Debt Service Funds, the Capital Projects Funds, the Enterprise Funds, the Internal Service Funds of the borough, setting the Salary Range Schedule for Appendix A Personnel and fee schedule.

Assemblyman Tyson Cox, “We definitely have been spending a lot of time talking about the budget over the last few meetings. We’ve had several work sessions with groups coming in to talk about what they would like their budget to look like and what they are proposing them to look like. The proposed budget we have from the mayor is a total of $87,787,886. we have amended that to add some increases for the clerk’s office and, as of right now, that’s at $87,799,729. We had a report from the finance department today and with this proposed budget, we were at $7.8 million dollars that we didn’t have that we were spending and if we are to get this $8 million from the COVID funds that we’re looking to get and 70% recovery sales tax for Fiscal Year 22, we’re looking to be, instead of in the hole 7.8 million, we’re looking to be in plus, very possibly, of a couple hundred thousand dollars. So, it’s looking a little bit better than we had thought.

During the public hearing portion of the ordinance, many in attendance spoke in favor of the proposed budget passing. Also, a proposed amendment from Jesse Bjorkman was withdrawn and a proposed amendment from Brent Johnson did not pass. The FY2022 budget of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, as submitted to the assembly on May 4th, was incorporated as part of this ordinance to establish the appropriations assigned to the various departments, accounts and positions.

Resolution Ordinance 2021-19 passed the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly and it takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on July 1, 2021.
