Kenai Peninsula Borough To Look For New Emergency Manager

The Kenai Peninsula Borough is going to begin a search for a new Emergency Manager for the Office of Emergency Management as Dan Nelson announced his intentions to move on to become a training and exercises consultant for emergency and disaster response across the state and country.

Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Charlie Pierce:

I think organizationally, we have the OEM department, Dan Nelson’s leaving. We’re going to move Brenda Ahlberg over there as acting. Then, we’ll post the grants administratives position and hopefully we’ll pickup an individual who’s just as talented as Ms. Ahlberg, if needed. Again, I mentioned, Ms. Ahlberg will be acting, there. We’re going to post that position first to see how the feeling of that position goes.”

Nelson told KSRM’s “The Bird’s Eye View” last Thursday:

I’m actually going to be moving on from the Office of Emergency Management doing some other things. I’m very, very happy to announce, we talked about information and one of the names that folks may know is Brenda Ahlberg who has been our public information officer and works for the borough mayor. She’s going to be taking over as acting for me. She’s been involved with responses since I’ve been there for about 12 or 14 years. She’s going to be taking over and, really, one of the great things about that is she’s got that knowledge. But all these systems, all these improvements in place, as much as I might be on the radio and be able to talk to you folks and maybe take credit for those good things or not so good things that happen from time-to-time, all of that consistency is going to be there. It’s going to be a great thing and hopefully a transition that, really, nobody notices.”

Nelson made that announcement that he would step down from the OEM position on KSRM the day following the 8.2 earthquake that triggered tsunami warnings last week. Moving forward, Nelson announced he intends to open up a consulting firm to do training and exercise in emergency and disaster response across Alaska and across the United States.
