The burn suspension on the Kenai Peninsula has been lifted, meaning permitted burning is allowed as of 12:00 pm Monday.
This includes approved burn barrels and brush/debris piles no larger than 10 feet across and 4 feet high.
Soldotna Division of Forestry’s Howie Kent detailed how residents can obtain a permit.
Kent: “They can come to our office and get a permit here at Forestry, or they can go online to forestry.alaska.gov/burn and they can obtain a burn permit online.”
After getting a permit, residents must still call the burn hotline to ensure burn conditions are optimal.
Kent: ““Before anybody burns, does any kind of debris burning whether it’s in a pile or in a burn barrel, they need to call our call-in number and that it 907-260-4269 and we’ll need their name, the location of where they’re burning and a contact number in case we need to call them back.”
The area surrounding burn barrels must be at least 30 feet from structures and overhead power lines, a 10 foot diameter must be cleared around the barrel down to mineral soil, and have 5/8 inch metal mesh screen over the top.
Water and a shovel should always be kept nearby and active fires should never be left unattended.
The Department of Natural Resources reminds Kenai Peninsula residents that fireworks are not allowed and cannot be shot off on the Kenai Peninsula.
