The Kenai Peninsula Fair is just around the corner, and this year’s theme is “Back to the Last Frontier.” The Fair begins In Ninilchik on Friday, August 9, and runs through Sunday, August 11.

“Our theme is Back to the Last Frontier, and we really want everyone to remember where we came from as Alaskans,” said fair coordinator Lara McGinnis.

With the nostalgic theme comes some new fair activities, like Homesteader Games. “My very, very favorite is going to be the Last Frontier Pentathlon. And in that, we have reinvented the Backwoods Girl and made it not just a girl’s only competition. We wanna see what those men can do, too,” said McGinnis. “It is gonna get serious, and they’re gonna be competing for not only bragging rights but a little bit of gold.”

The fair will feature musical performances and entertainment acts on the Ocean and Inlet stages. There will also be loads of fair foods, fun activities and competitions, and a rodeo.

The weekend kicks off on Friday with performances from Paul Isaak the “Funny Juggler” and Penelope the Clown, as well as pig races and an egg toss competition. On Saturday, the Homesteader games begin, as well as a sack race, a cornhole tournament, and the weekend rodeo. Rounding out the fair on Sunday, the rodeo wraps up, and Homesteader Games finishes with the Last Frontier Pentathalon.
