Kenai Peninsula Food Bank Receives Holiday Miracle

Some call it magic, others call it a miracle! The Kenai Peninsula Food Bank has achieved their goal of obtaining 1,200 turkeys in time for Thanksgiving, and it’s all thanks to the support of the community!

According to Greg Meyer, the Executive Director at KPFB, he wasn’t too sure how they were going to reach their goal this year. With many families struggling, they needed something, they needed a miracle.

Meyers had written to Hilcorp’s giving program, to see if anyone would be willing to donate to their cause.

After a few days, when Meyers went to check the turkey counter, the food bank not only met their goal, but surpassed it by over 150 turkeys!

Hilcorp had responded to the food bank’s cause, and helped push them beyond the goal!

“Between Marathon [Petroleum] and Hilcorp and FRCH Rental, Haverly Homes- Jack Wright Real Estate, I mean they just some big, some small amounts of it. Just it’s all I can say, it added up and it pushed beyond our goal,” said Meyer.

Meyer says that every year, Hilcorp is allotted a certain amount of money, which can be used as donations for any community program.

“Each employee gets to decide where those funds go. And so a number of them decided to put part of their a lot in for the year to to help feed feed our folks over the holidays,” said Meyers.

Now that the KPFB is stocked up with turkey’s, the main dish is taken care of. The food bank is still going to accept donations for side dishes such as stuffing, gravy, yams, green beans, and whatever other sides on could expect at a Thanksgiving feast. Whatever foods that are not used during Thanksgiving will be saved for Christmas.

Speaking of feast, Meyer did want to inform the community that Kenai Peninsula Food Bank would also be hosting a Thanksgiving Meal on Wednesday, November 22nd from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. at the food bank, and all are welcome to attend!

With all things considered, Meyer sends out his gratitude to all those who donated, and thanks them for helping the food bank serve the members of the community for another holiday.

“I just want to be grateful. It always seems like we’re always say thank you, but the need is there so people want to support with the food drives that are going on around the community, that would definitely help fill out their meal,” said Meyer.
