During the January 21st Kenai City Council meeting, Police Chief Gus Sandahl gave some insight into a conference on marijuana he attended in Colorado recently.
During that discussion the council determined that any ordinance put in place would not be implemented until after February 24 when the initiative is effective, leaving a grey area as far as what is legal, and what isn’t.
Sandahl: “We’re still trying to figure that out within the next month so I hope to get a lot more clarification hopefully from various state entities including the Department of Law and we’ll see if there is some more guidance. We’re still going to figure it out in the coming weeks and we will be giving more clear updates to our officers and to the public as we get closer to that.
Furthermore Chief Sandahl informed the Council of a safety hazard attributed to a newly popularized practice of extracting THC content from the marijuana plant which is concentrated into a smokeable oil by use of highly flammable butane.
Sandahl: I don’t remember them presenting data of explosions or fires occurring before 2014, but I specifically know the provided information that there were 31 or 32 explosions of fires related to flammable fuels being used to extract hash oil from marijuana.
The council has stated that they will continue discussions to set their own regulations of marijuana use within the city.
