The Kenai City Council enacted Ordinance 3331-2023 to increase the estimated revenues and appropriations in the General Fund for the Police Department and accept grants from the United States Department of Justice and Alaska Municipal League Joint Insurance Association to purchase ballistic vests in the amount of $5,116.
City Manager Terry Eubank explains how the the city will receive the ballistic vests;
“We are very fortunate here at the city to have two grant programs come together. One is provided by the U.S. Department of Justice for the purchase of ballistic vests. And the city’s insurance company, Alaska Municipal League Joint Insurance Association has a program too for the purchase of ballistic vests. The combination of those two each is fifty fifty, results in the city not having to contribute to the purchase of these vests. But, we get the protective gear for our officers.”
The Kenai Police Department participates in a Ballistic Vest Partnership (BVP) grant program through the Department of Justice, which covers 50% of the cost of ballistic vests purchased for officers and the City’s current insurance company, Alaska Municipal League Joint Insurance has a ballistic vest reimbursement program, which covers 50% of the cost of ballistic vest purchased for officers. Together, these two programs were able to cover 100% of the total cost of four ballistic vests.
