Last weekend the City of Soldotna, Kenai River Professional Guide Association, Kenai River Sportfishing Association, and the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce teamed up for the first trash clean up weigh-in after the Kenai River Spring Cleanup Week.

Soldotna Council Member Keith Baxter said Saturday was a beautiful day for the community barbecue and weigh-in.

Baxter: “It was really exciting to see all the river trash come in and be collected in one spot, there was over 1,700 pounds of trash collected by the schools that went out on Friday with the Kenai River Professional Guides Association and that was pretty neat to see and then the community groups they really stepped up to and we had over 540 pounds collected by different community groups and the individual who brought in the most trash actually brought in 168 pounds.”

Baxter said it was a great success for the first year.

Baxter: “Now every year there are groups that go out and clean up the river throughout the summer and I know there is a Kenai River clean up on the upper river in the fall but this was the first year for the Kenai River Spring Clean Up based here in the lower and middle river area and I really hope that there is still interest next year to do it again, I know everybody who participated this year is excited for next year already.”

Osrick White brought in the most trash for one individual, Integrity Janitorial brought in the most trash for a community group and Redoubt Elementary brought in the most for a school.
