Kenai River Personal Use Dip Net Fishery Opens On Saturday

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is reminding Alaska residents that the Kenai River personal use dipnet fishery opens on Saturday and continues through July 31, 2021.

 

City Manager Paul Ostrander speaks on how the city of Kenai is preparing for Saturday:

“As folks know this is a fishery that the state has authorized and the city of Kenai has done everything we can to make sure that its run in a way that participants in the fishery can enjoy it but also to minimize the impacts to the city of Kenai. This initially started some years ago. It was very impactful. Our beaches were, in the middle of fishery and after the fishery, a ton of fish carcasses and trash, it really was not an orderly fishery, but over time we have put together a structure that creates an orderly fishery and our beaches are relatively clean during and after the fishery. As far as this year goes, we are going to be conducting the fishery in the same way that we have for the last few years. This year, again, it’ll be credit card only. We won’t be accepting cash. North beach, south beach and our dock will be accessible and we’ll have fee stations at each of those locations. It’s very similar to the last few years and really identical to the way we ran it last year. The fee structure is not changed. We are expecting things to go smoothly. Hopefully we get some fish in the river.”

 

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reminds Alaskans that the retention of king salmon in the Kenai River personal use fishery is prohibited. Any king salmon incidentally caught may not be removed from the water and must be released immediately and returned unharmed.

 

Dipnetting on the Kenai River is allowed each day from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. from July 10, through July 31. An Upper Cook Inlet Personal Use permit and a 2021 Alaska Sport Fishing license are required to participate. Only Alaska residents can participate. The Upper Cook Inlet Personal Use permits are available at local Alaska Department of Fish and Game offices, vendors, and the ADF&G online store.
