The Kenai River Brown Bears opened the 2019-20 season on Wednesday with a first-round loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights 3-2 in a shootout at the North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
The Brown Bears, with a pair of goals in the third period, momentarily held a 2-1 advantage over the Knight; however, WBS tied the game midway through regulation time. Following a scoreless overtime, four Brown Bears (Zach Krajnik, Theo Thrun, Kyle Valiquette and Trey LaBarge) were unable to score on Knights goalie Johnny Kaljan. The Knights found the back of the net on their fourth attack for the 3-2 shootout victory.
In 2018-19, the Brown Bears played 24 games which were decided by one goal, winning 14 of 24 contests. The Brown Bears also went 4-0 at the NAHL Showcase in 2018.
Kenai River continues play at the North American Hockey League Showcase with three remaining games.
