UPDATE 10:17 a.m. – Alaska State Trooper dispatch reports that the Kenai Spur Highway near mile point 4 has reopened.

ORIGINAL – Alaska State Trooper dispatch tells KSRM that the Kenai Spur Highway is closed at mile post 4 due to icy road conditions and multiple accidents.

Dispatch said:

In the area of mile 4 of the Spur Highway, it’s currently shut down due to extremely icy conditions and multiple accidents in the area. We have law enforcement on the scene as well as medical personnel. DOT has been notified of the road conditions. Mile 4 of the Spur is in the area of Swallow Drive and the Spur. It’s in the area that’s really hilly.”

The National Weather Service of Anchorage reports that slippery roads are expected this morning across portions of the Kenai Peninsula.

Many area roads are likely very slippery thanks to a rain/snow mix overnight combined with near freezing temperatures. Light accumulations that have melted and refrozen as black ice will be hard to see and should not be underestimated. Elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses will be the most susceptible to refreezing. Some light snowfall through the day could also produce limited visibility at times.

Drivers should slow down and use caution when driving on area roads this morning due to the slippery conditions. Leave extra space between vehicles and plan for extra time to get where you are going. For the latest road conditions please go to 511.alaska.gov.
