The Kenai City Council passed a resolution supporting the efforts of Kenai Central High School to secure grant funding for the construction of permanent restroom facilities at Ed Hollier Field. The field has been without permanent restroom facilities for spectators since the school opened in the early 1960s.
The resolution, which passed as amended, was sponsored by Mayor Brian Gabriel:
“As I spoke at our last meeting regarding Will Chervenak, the vice principal over at Kenai Central High School had applied for a mini grant to help with the construction of the bathroom facilities. This also includes a snack bar, so it’s more than just permanent bathroom facilities. That didn’t really meet the criteria of what we have that mini grant set up for so I asked him to please give us some and we would hopefully pass a resolution that would help them in their fundraising goals for the bathroom. Now, they do have permission from the school district to reach out to raise those funds so all that is already been established. What this does is it helps them with the community’s support that they may need if they go for the Rasmuson Foundation and other groups like that. I think this just gives them a little bit, shows that there’s buy in from the community, that we certainly support this effort on his part.”
According to Chervenak, in a typical year, KCHS approaches $7,000 in rental costs. The concept of the bathroom project is to have two bathrooms, concessions, and storage housed in the same facility. the estimate cost from the school district for the project is $250,000. The school district has already created a financial account that could have matching funds to it as well. He says the goal is to raise $250,000 to pay for the materials and equipment needed for the project.
The resolution was adopted unanimously as amended.
