Kenai to Recognize City’s Original Charter with Cornerstone Ceremony

The City of Kenai will host a ceremony to honor the Charter Commission members of 1963 for their role in the town becoming home ruled this weekend.

Mayor Porter: “In April of 63, it had been put before the voters in May, we had a group of eight individuals in the community who had gotten together to form our charter. The charter is like the constitution of our city, it’s the guidelines or structure that you look at to govern yourself. We want to recognize in a permanent place so that is never forgotten and certainly want to inspire the younger generations when they walk by and see those names to look up the history of their community.”

 

The large rock from Kenai’s beach is already in place but city officials will attach a plaque to recognize the eight members’ community contributions at 2 pm this Sunday, November 29, between the Kenai City Hall and Kenai Public Library.

 

Porter says remaining Charter Commission member Richard Morgan plans to attend Sunday’s ceremony and many of the individuals to be recognized have families that still live here locally.

 

 

The public is invited to join the short dedication celebration this Sunday, along with refreshments afterwards in the Kenai Library.
