The Board of Education is conducting a review of the amount of leave taken by teaching staff who double as coaches.
A request by board member Lynn Hohl in January for an administrative analysis of teachers’ leave aims to account for the hours spent away from the regular classes and how that affects the remaining students’ learning.
In her request, Hohl says the students left in coaching-teachers’ classes need effective instruction from substitute teachers during absences.
She suggested a look into board policy along with more consideration be taken to ensure that substitute teachers are consistent when coaches leave.
In a analysis dated July 28, Director of Finance Lori Olson stated, “It is worth noting that coaches are not the only users of Extra-Curricular leave. Other staff are sometimes needed to act as chaperones, depending on the size and makeup of the group and the ability to recruit parent or community members.”
At the time of that memo, the district was also working to collect the information requested by Hohl about the number of substitutes used by each coach since the district does not keep those records.
