The Board of Education approved the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District’s Fiscal Year 2015 budget, which included an amendment to add funding for the Skyview Pool.

Superintendent Dr. Steve Atwater said it was the same budget introduced in February other than the amendment.

Dr. Atwater: “And so we increased the amount of the budget by $180,000 to include the operations for the Skyview Pool. Otherwise it was the same budget introduced and the board passed the budget unanimously. Next step is to then pass it to the Assembly and they have thirty days to react from there.”

Board of Education Member Dan Castimore wrote a detailed letter suggesting a few options in order to manage all the district pools better.

Castimore: “We have to gather more data and that’s the one thing that’s really, we’re lacking that. We really can’t tell you how many people use the pools on a daily basis, we can’t tell you how many people use it for open swim versus lap swim, we have no records of how many people have come to us to ask to rent the pool and we’ve said no to them or that kind of information. I think we have to get more information as to how we use our pools that’s probably the most important thing we can do going forward.”

Castimore also said he hopes that if funding for the pool does come through for this year that the long term funding discussion doesn’t fall by the wayside.
