The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education will meet at the Borough Administration Building in Soldotna at 7pm tonight.

KPBSD President Joe Arness said the topics on the agenda will be the next financial year, what they can do to improve the deficit, and the usual reviews. However, one proposal to save money for the district has received community pushback.

Arness: “The one thing that will probably be of interest this evening for a lot of folks that’s really not even on the agenda, one of the  things that’s being talked about is to drain the Skyview pool for next year.”

Right now the Skyview pool is being used for swim lessons, water aerobics, lap swim, masters classes as well as student activities.

Next year Skyview will be a made into a middle school and Arness said middle schools in this district do not have pools therefore it comes down to the question of how to save money.

We previously spoke to Dr. Steve Atwater about the district’s deficit.

Atwater: “The first thing to understand is that we are rolling forward the existing level of service that we’re offering this year. When we roll that forward for next year, given the known level of revenue, we come up with a  $3.7 million deficit. So what we need  to do is to approach it that way but we also understand that we have a good chance to receive more revenue as the spring plays out at the legislative level as well as here at the borough level.”
